Petrobras has signed a 22-year liquefied natural gas sales and purchase agreement with Cheniere Marketing, adding a long-duration US supply contract to Brazil’s gas portfolio.
Under the agreement, Petrobras will buy approximately 0.8 million tonnes per annum of LNG on a free-on-board basis. Petrobras said the contract is intended to reduce exposure to spot-market volatility, strengthen portfolio risk management and increase flexibility in meeting its gas commitments.
Cheniere operates the Sabine Pass and Corpus Christi liquefaction platforms. Petrobras said their combined operating production capacity is about 56 mtpa. The new contract therefore links a large flexible US export system with a Brazilian market where LNG can play a balancing role alongside domestic production, pipeline gas, hydropower and other generation.
The duration is notable. After periods in which buyers sought shorter and more flexible commitments, the LNG market has continued to produce multi-decade contracts where buyers value supply certainty and sellers seek revenue visibility for expansion.
FOB terms also matter. Petrobras takes the cargo at the loading point, preserving control over shipping and destination decisions within the contract framework. That flexibility can be valuable when domestic gas and power conditions change.
The agreement is another indication that LNG contracting is not simply a forecast about gas demand decades ahead. It is also a form of risk allocation: buyers trade some future flexibility for supply security, while sellers gain bankable long-term demand.
