Kobelco takes LNG compressor engineering toward liquid hydrogen
Kobelco's presence on the Gastech floor connects a century of compressor engineering with two demanding cryogenic markets: today's LNG carriers and the emerging liquid-hydrogen supply chain.
The Kobelco stand in Bangkok puts machinery rather than slogans at the centre of the story. Kobe Steel has a long-established compressor business serving energy and process industries, including LNG plants and marine applications.
On LNG carriers, boil-off gas from cargo tanks can be compressed and supplied to dual-fuel propulsion engines, while excess gas may be routed into reliquefaction systems. Kobelco supplies screw and reciprocating compressors for these applications and describes systems designed for both low- and high-pressure marine engine architectures.
The more immediate development, however, is hydrogen. On 15 September, Kobe Steel and Kawasaki Heavy Industries announced a supply contract for an oil-flooded screw compressor for the fuel-gas system of a 40,000-cubic-metre liquefied-hydrogen carrier. The vessel forms part of Japan's Green Innovation Fund demonstration programme for commercialising a liquefied-hydrogen supply chain.
That creates a direct engineering bridge between the established LNG market represented across Gastech and a future hydrogen shipping system. Cryogenic gases impose demanding requirements on compressors, materials, seals and thermal management; Kobe Steel has also been developing an ultra-low-temperature reciprocating hydrogen compressor for maritime use.
For the Gastech audience, the significance is practical. The energy transition will require new molecules, but it will also depend on whether industrial machinery can move, compress and manage those molecules reliably at scale. Kobelco is positioning compressor technology developed through LNG and process-gas service as part of that next infrastructure layer.
