PTT’s Rayong gas infrastructure puts engineering and maintenance at the centre of Thailand’s energy story
Some of the most important conversations at Gastech happen away from the product launches. The Stratawire met Teerayut Naratchayanon, General Manager in the Technical and Asset Engineering Division, Engineering & Maintenance Department at PTT’s Rayong Gas Separation Plant, bringing the focus firmly onto the infrastructure that has to keep Thailand’s gas system working every day.
PTT’s latest published operating figures put total capacity across six gas separation plants in Thailand at 2,650 MMSCFD. The Rayong complex sits at the heart of that network, separating natural gas into products that feed power, industry and Thailand’s petrochemical value chain.
A major infrastructure transition in Rayong
That operating base is also changing. PTT has been developing Gas Separation Plant Unit 7 at Map Ta Phut to replace the capacity of Unit 1, which has operated for more than three decades. GSP7 is designed for up to 460 MMSCFD of feed gas, recovering ethane and producing streams including propane, LPG and natural gasoline alongside sales gas.
The project also requires a substantial interconnecting system. PTT describes six pipelines running approximately 13 kilometres between the existing Rayong facilities and GSP7, returning the separated products for quality control and onward use.
The engineering story behind energy security
For an industry conference dominated by questions of supply, LNG and new technology, the Rayong story is a reminder that energy security ultimately depends on physical assets and the people responsible for their reliability. Procurement, inspection, maintenance, plant efficiency and asset life all sit underneath the headline numbers.
That makes engineering and maintenance leadership an important part of the Gastech conversation. The next generation of gas infrastructure will be judged not only on nameplate capacity, but on how safely, efficiently and reliably it performs once the conference stands have been packed away.
